Saturday night sissy fights...

As one of the last actual fans of the NBA (check around I'm telling you there's not many of us) I feel obligated to say something about the fight that occurred this weekend between the Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks.

Most people remember the "Malice at the Palace" or whatever they want to call it from a few years ago. The Detroit vs Indiana fight...Ron Artest-gate...whatever. I could understand some of the issues with that incident. I agree, you can't attack the fans, no matter what they do to you, there's no real justification. I also don't think fans should be allowed to throw shit at people in any sporting event...unless its Barry Bonds, I'm all for throwing shit at him. Because I know if anyone ever threw something at me while I was doing my job, all hell would break loose in my office.

However, there is no relation with that fight, and the one that happened last saturday. If for some reason you don't know what I'm talking about watch here:

shockingly the NBA took down all the good videos of this..if you need a better version go to espn.com

My question, and it's been brought up by numerous other people in the past few days, is why is this fight such news. No fans were hurt or attacked at all. One might have gotten tumbled on, but that was quickly fixed. So what's the big deal. From my viewpoint I saw one really hard foul, a small shoving match, a 45 second wrestling match, and one of the sissiest punches I've seen in a long time. That's national news now? Fights like this occur in other sports much more often than in the NBA, and there was a point in the NBA when incidents such as this would occur and it made zero headlines. I've seen a clip where Kevin McHale literally clotheslined Kurt Rambis on the court, and he wasn't even thrown out of the game. Why now does a sissy slap punch make headline news and get the player suspended for 15 games. What did I miss?

Also, Carmelo Anthony, I understand you have been under some scrutiny in recent years with some off the court issues. However, if you are going to "take it back to b-more" and really fight, please please don't half ass it. And definitely don't back pedal like your mom yelled at you to come inside for dinner. That's all I ask.

You propose the question pertaining to why is a fight among NBA teams news that the media feel necessary to share with their viewers? Interesting but not the total question that I feel needs to be asked, the questions that need to be proposed are: "Why do we allow the media to feed us this garbage?", and "When are we going to send a message to the media groups in this country that the information they are disseminating to us is an insult to our intelligence?"

For years now, since the MTV show Real World aired in 1992, cable television feels the need to assault the American public with "reality" shows. This practice, I refuse to call this a phenomenon and give it a positive connotation is most readers minds, has perpetuated and expanded exponentially since than, why? Because the American public is eating it up like candy on Halloween? No, I don't believe that is the real reason, because I refuse to believe the general intelligence level of our nation has not so degraded to this basic a thinking level. Don't get me wrong, I understand the psychology behind why people choose to watch this garbage, they want an escape from the negativity in their own lives by viewing someone elses stupid decisions. It is apparent to me that the reason these shows continue to air is that the public continues to tune-in to them, yes, but also the degradation of our societies morals and values. No longer are we family focused, in general, but are mostly now self focused. No longer are we a society that seeks to contribute for the good of all, but are most interested in what can society or government do for us. How do these shows have anything to do with this degradation you ask? Because they present to us an alternative for addressing whatever is our own personal weaknesses, and taking actions to make our selves a better member of society, which in turn creates peoples who are only looking out for themselves, not becomoing and maintaining themselves as productive members of society.

Ok, so back to the NBA fight....this to me is no different than our infatuation as a nation with our celebrities. It is the media that is constantly barraging us with whatever the lastest gossip is about whatever celebrity was spotted trying to live their life like a normal membver of society....and we as members of that same society eat it up like candy for the same reasons we are so interested in reality shows as discussed above, we want an escape.

So at the heart of it all based on these statements, what are we escaping from really? It is not our lives or how crappy that life is, we are seeking an escape from the responsibility to do something about what is wrong with our society. Want proof?, just look to our government. Why are we even looking to our elected officials to fix the debt crisis?, the housing market?, the strenght of the dollar? Because we are too lazy to spend the energy to do something about it, so it is much easier to blame someone else and who better than elected officials?

You ask who cares about a fight at an NBA game and you are right, who does? Basketball is a competitive sport and passions and emotions are going to run high in the effort of attempting to win the game, got it. The question is, why do we as Americans tolerate the media insulting our intelligence levels by assuming that we are going to have an interest in this or reality shows or celebrity gossip information? Turn that crap off and send a message to the producers and television groups of this country. Take your dollars and spend them wisely, sending a message to our elected officials as to what is important to us as a society, rather than be pawns to just listen to, view, or follow whatever ridiculous information these arrogant persons feel our small little brains can handle. It is time to take back our country and what it stands for....that is all, thanks.
